The In-between time

The In-between Time & Creativity

The time between Fall & Winter: the end of another cycle. The light is dimming, leaves have fallen, and the world seems quieter. The smell of decay and wood smoke, air prickles the skin and waters run cold.
I put the gardens to rest. Tuck them in with love.
I walk amongst the sleeping trees and whisper ‘good night’, knowing that they will rest long and deep and will re-emerge before the Winter is fully over.
I take note of nature slowing down and preparing for hibernation.
I rest a little longer, expend a little less, allow more dreamtime and give myself much needed alone time.
I protect my seeds of creation and feed ideas I will eventually manifest.
I jot down ideas every day, anything that inspires: a word, a sentence, a dream, a sketch.
I let it all sit.
When the days start getting longer and the light shines a little brighter I spend the time merging the ideas together. I plan my new art projects and creations to come for the new year ahead.
The Winter Solstice and the days when the light comes back are not far off. I will enjoy the downtime, dreamtime and inspiration until then.
Happy Creating!

Summer Endings

Summer Endings

‘All good things must come to an end” The bad ones don’t get off easy either!!
The sunlight is changing, the spiders are fixing their webs, the goldenrod is blooming and the geese are slipping into their V formation. You can almost feel the frost coming.
Remember the Spring & Summer inspirations. What worked? What didn’t?
Like all cycles of birth and death… discard the people, places and ideas that didn’t feed you.
The ones that gave you crumbs when you deserved a feast. The ones that took your fire instead of fed it. Let go of projects that didn’t work. Toss the ones you’ve held on to, hoping to get re-inspired. Let things go. Clean the slate for new creativity. Discard old images on the canvas. Old images and projects can keep your energy in an old place. Keep you fixated & frustrated. Re-gesso that canvas! Fall always feels like a new beginning. Time to brainstorm new ideas and intentions for the next cycle. Happy “endings of summer” and a wish for a fruitful harvest of new ideas and creative fuel!
Happy Creating!

Painting on Tree Stumps: Honouring the Endings

Tree stumps..the ones we’ve taken down. The ones we’ve wanted to end or to stop growing.
Metaphorically every stump I see is the end of something.
Something no longer wanted. Something no longer alive.
Endings can be sad. Endings can be painful.
I saw the emptiness and decided to make something beautiful. Cement the ending. Honour the experience. Honour the ending.
The paint itself can end the growth. The painting itself can give it a burial.
Everything changes. Everything ends. Everything has a cycle.
Even dead tree stumps can become a work of art.
What ending do you want to honour?
A tree, a life, a relationship, a time in your life, a habit, a dream..an illusion?
Want it to be meaningful?
Go paint a tree stump.
Remember every ending makes for a new beginning
Happy Creating!

PAINTING BLINDFOLDED:A Lesson in Letting Go of control

PAINTING BLINDFOLDED..
A Lesson in Letting go of control

Black & White, Yes or No? Always wanting answers. Death & taxes are possibly the only ‘for sure” things in life. I’ve always wanted guarantees and absolutes. That things turn out the way you want them to. The scenarios you create in your mind whether it be a well thought-out painting, your career, your relationships, dreams etc, many, if not most  don’t turn out like you wanted them to, hoped they would, imagined they could be. Letting go & trusting that things turn out exactly the way they should. Crazy concept & hard to grasp. The letting go of control.
The ideas in your mind reach through your hand that holds the paint brush you use to create. It most often doesn’t turn out the way you thought. It can be so frustrating! I’ve walked away from many an art piece, hidden the canvas, so frustrated I can’t make what I wanted happen! I usually drag it back out, seeing it for what it is and just being in the moment with it. Picking back up the brush & starting to work with what is. Letting the brush and colours do their thing. I’m rarely disappointed. I rarely remember this.
When I get in the state of “wanting”, of putting up barricades and barriers to try to change & control the ‘river” of life, I put on the blindfold. I put my brushes and hands in the paints and go for it! I’m in the moment creating. When the blindfold comes off there are no straight lines or perfect circles. There is beauty and awe. No disappointments.
Remember this; as much as we want to have control over life, people, places, dreams, circumstance & painting, no one really wants a “paint by numbers” canvas as a life.
